RUA

RUA features powerful works by two of New Zealand’s choreographic Arts Laureates.

Originally premiering in 2015, In Transit is a profound work by Louise Potiki Bryant (Kāi Tahu, Kāti Mamoe Tahu, Waitaha) and AV designer/composer Paddy Free (Pitch Black). This piece delves deeply into the cultural memories and transitions of Māori rituals of encounter, weaving together striking visuals and an evocative soundscape. Jo Kilgour’s lighting design and Kasia Pol’s set and costume design enhance the immersive portrayal of heritage and identity. With a history of 16 seasons spanning the globe—from Paris to Liverpool and Nelson to Napier—In Transit remains a deeply resonant and thoughtful work that reflects on the cultural and emotional layers of Aotearoa. Louise, a 2019 Arts Foundation Laureate, brought her extraordinary choreographic vision to life once again for this festival.

Matter by Ross McCormack, which premiered at Q Theatre in 2016, returned to the stage with its exploration of humanity’s obsession with order within a surreal, dystopian landscape. Featuring spear-like plinths that dissects the performance space, Matter creates a compelling and introspective experience, inspired by multidisciplinary artistry. Jason Wright’s soundscape and Jo Kilgour’s lighting design amplify its narrative, examining purpose, indecision, and the profound impact of seemingly mundane objects. Acclaimed globally for its innovative interplay of light, sound, and vision, Matter is a thrilling showcase of Ross’s choreographic genius. Ross, a 2017 Arts Foundation Laureate, continues to shape the future of dance with Matter being the first of three works he has created for NZDC to date.
