RUA

Experience the extraordinary at Tempo Dance Festival 2024 with "Rua," an exceptional double bill featuring powerful works created for The New Zealand Dance Company(NZDC) by two of New Zealand’s choreographic Arts Laureates. With two performances only on 17 & 18 October at Q Theatre's Rangatira, this event promises to showcase two of Aotearoa’s finest choreographers.

Having premiered in 2015, In Transit is a profound work by Louise Potiki Bryant (Kāi Tahu, Kāti Mamoe Tahu, Waitaha) and AV designer/composer Paddy Free (Pitch Black). In Transit delves deep into the cultural memories and transitions of Māori rituals of encounter. Through a seamless blend of visual and auditory elements, this piece offers a vivid reflection on the traces left behind by these rituals. With a striking lighting design by Jo Kilgour and an evocative set and costume design by Kasia Pol, In Transit presents a rich, immersive portrayal of heritage and identity. This thoughtful and evocative performance resonates deeply, inviting the audience to connect with the cultural and emotional layers embedded within the work. In Transit has enjoyed 15 seasons around the world from Paris to Liverpool, Nelson to Napier.

Louise was a 2019 Arts Foundation Laureate for her extraordinary body of choreographic excellence.

Matter by Ross McCormack had its world premiere here at Q Theatre in 2016 to extraordinary reviews from critics and audiences alike. McCormack, a celebrated choreographer, brings his meticulous attention to detail to this exploration of human obsession with order in a surreal, dystopian landscape. Matter draws inspiration from various multi-disciplinary artists, creating a world dominated by spear-like plinths that dissect and redefine the performance space. The soundscape by Jason Wright and lighting design by Jo Kilgour further amplify a compelling narrative and examines questions of purpose, indecision, and the profound impact of seemingly mundane objects on the human psyche. Matter has been acclaimed around the world for its innovative collaboration of light, sound, and vision, making it a must-see for contemporary dance enthusiasts.

Ross received a 2017 Arts Foundation Laureate and Matter was the first of three works Ross has choreographed on NZDC to date.

Don’t miss the opportunity to witness the artistry and innovation of "Rua," a true testament to the extraordinary talent within New Zealand's dance community. Join us at this year's Tempo Dance Festival and be captivated by these masterful performances.
