100 WINDS

Taupō Hau Rau

A multi-artform collaboration by The New Zealand Dance Company, New Zealand String Quartet, and Chamber Music New Zealand

100 Winds / Taupō Hau Rau premiered in March–April 2025 with performances in Tāmaki Makaurau, Ōtautahi, and Te Whanganui-a-Tara. Rooted in the shifting winds of Lake Taupō and drawing on the region’s traditional name - Taupō-nui-a-Tia, Taupō Hau Rau (the hundred winds of Taupō) - this powerful work brings together live chamber music and contemporary dance in a meditation on identity, change, and connection.

Conceived and choreographed by NZDC Artistic Director Moss Te Ururangi Patterson, the work explores how we navigate transformation, both personal and political, within the forces that shape us: environmental, cultural, historical, and unseen. Each movement sequence embodied a different “wind,” reflecting moments of serenity, resistance, and renewal.

Through movement and music, 100 Winds offers a deeply immersive experience, inviting audiences to reflect on their relationship to land, history, and collective transformation.

REVIEWS

“[The dancers] interpretation of Glass’s pulsating and shifting textures was effortlessly organic, working through Patterson’s beautifully choreographed rushes, moments of respite and inventive groupings.“
