School Workshops

The New Zealand Dance Company’s youth workshops and school shows are designed to use dance as a means to inspire and energise young people. Our work with students seeks to challenge and encourage them to enjoy being creative!

DETAILS

Performances showcase excerpts from NZDC repertoire and are typically 45 minutes concluding with a Q&A session.

Workshops are either 1hr or 1.5hrs and are delivered by two NZDC dancers for up to 20 students per workshop (there may be an additional cost for over 20 students and numbers may depend on the space you have available – talk to us about what might work for you).

Our reputation as a hub for contemporary dance in New Zealand means that professional, high-calibre dancers will encourage and support your students as they develop new skills. The style of the youth workshops mirrors how our professional contemporary dancers improvise and choreograph routines in the studio. As a result, participants develop confidence working in a collaborative and innovative environment.

Students in the past have found their experience of the workshop to be engaging and valuable; one teacher recalled, “I saw all my students smile, work hard, and most importantly, every one of the students involved in your workshop today experienced success.”

Workshop(s) can be tailored to suit ages and to your specific needs. Here are some suggestions of what we can offer:

  • Contemporary technique session NZDC style
  • Introduction to contemporary dance

  • Using the body to present words and poetry
  • Assistance with current school productions
  • Learn or practice selected repertoire from our NCEA resources i.e. 'Brouhaha', ‘Trees, Birds then People’ or ‘Rotunda

Contemporary dance is centred around thinking about new ways to experiment with ideas. Get your students involved in one of our workshops and help them to explore how to use creative dance as a form of expression.
