Tāmaki Tour
2023 – MATARIKI HUNGA NUI

CALL FOR PROPOSALS: Closing Date Monday 13th March 2023

Emerging Choreographers
New Work Development & Mentoring

The New Zealand Dance Company is calling for applications from emerging choreographers interested in creating new short works on the company, which will premiere and tour as part of our Tamaki Tour in Auckland June/July 2023. This year’s schools show will be a series of short Matariki themed works, titled Matariki Hunga Nui.

Development and rehearsal dates will be from 8 May – 09 June 2023 and the project will begin with a wānanga led by multi-disciplinary artist and creative collaborator Pita Turei (Ngai Tai Ki Tamaki, Ngāti Pāoa, Ngā Rauru Kiitahi).

This wānanga will offer choreographers an opportunity to connect with the sky and the whetū, discovering the potency of Matariki in both historical and contemporary contexts as kaupapa and inspiration for the works.

Choreographers will then receive mentoring and support throughout their creative process, culminating in performances around Tāmaki Makaurau from 19 June - 9 July 2023.

Note: We are seeking proposals that are choreographic rather than design dependant and concepts which are child and youth friendly.

To apply please send the following to Interim Chief Executive [email protected]:

  • C.V.
  • Links to any videos of your work
  • Letter of interest in creating work with NZDC including concept, number of dancers, proposed music and duration
  • Dates of availability throughout 8 May - 9 June.
